An investigation has been launched into the former mayor of the northern Croatian city of Varazdin, Ivan Cehok, his deputy Zlatko Horvat, the CEO of the Varazdin-based construction company Zagorje-Tehnobeton, Miroslav Bunic, and former city official Stanko Vitez, on suspicion of abuse of office, bribe taking and incitement to abuse office.

The probe was launched at the request of the anti-corruption agency USKOK.

Cehok's attorney Vlado Sevsek told Croatian Television that his client had been taken to the USKOK office in Zagreb for questioning.

Varazdin police declined to confirm that the four men had been arrested, saying that this was an USKOK case.

The four are suspected of defrauding the Varazdin city budget of some HRK 6.5 million (EUR 860,000).
