The Croatian Waters company CEO, Ivica Plisic, on Tuesday visited Osijek-Baranja and Vukovar-Srijem counties to inspect flood defence systems and assessed that excellent measures have been taken in preparation of a flood wave heading in that direction, adding that he believed the floods would not be as dramatic as they had been in central Europe.

"We are expecting large quantities of waters but our fortifications are one metre higher than the historical maximum the Danube has ever reached and with additional sand banks there shouldn't be any problems, however some local problems could occur due to overfilled wells, underground waters and we are prepared for that too", Plisic said.

He said there could be problems further downstream where holiday houses are located as there were no embankments there.

He added that around 200,000 sand bags had been filled and piled up and another 100,000 are ready in reserve to be filled if need be.
