The European Commission does not wish to comment on a recent statement by Serbia's President Tomislav Nikolic that his country would not be running to enter the European Union. The EC said that it does not impose deadlines and the process of accession lies entirely in the country wishing to access the EU, the commission's spokesman, Peter Stano, said on Monday.

Speaking at a party rally of which he was president until elected president of the country, Nikolic said on Saturday that his country wanted to access the EU, however they were not in a rush and that the past ten years of rushing had brought the country to the edge of poverty.

He added that Serbia was prepared to fulfill all the preconditions set for the country in the accession process but that it would never give up Kosovo.
