The European Commission on Thursday selected 43 energy infrastructure projects to increase the European Union's security of energy supply by creating cross-border infrastructure.

The Commission has earmarked 2.3 billion euros for the projects, 31 of which relate to natural gas infrastructure and 12 to electricity.

Among the selected projects was one for the construction of a natural gas supply interconnection between Hungary and Croatia, for which 20 million euros has been set aside.

"By co-financing parts of these projects up to 50% the EU contribution will help to lever up to 22 billion euros of private sector investment," the Commission said in a statement.

The Nabucco gas pipeline project received the most funds -- 200 million euros.
