Vojislav Blazevic, who is on trial on charges that he set up two explosions that occurred in west Zagreb in early January, was released from detention on Friday afternoon upon the expiry of maximum six-month custody period under the law.

The release of Blazevic was announced earlier on Friday by his lawyer Veljko Miljevic.

Blazevic is charged with a crime of putting human life and property in danger, which carries a prison sentence of up to eight years.

The first explosion occurred on January 9 at the Podsused railway station west of Zagreb and was detonated when a freight train passed over it.

The second explosion occurred two days later a little after midnight at a bus station a little further down the track towards downtown Zagreb.

Blazevic insists on his innocence. He claims that he had learnt about the first blast from media and that he was passing-by the bus station where the second explosive device was set and that he only warned other passers-by in order to prevent casualties.

The trial commenced in late May and will resume in September.
