The State Election Commission (DIP) reported that by 4 pm Sunday, 14.63% of the electorate had attended the polls or 445,000 eligible voters in this their first EU parliament election.

DIP President Branko Hrvatin told the media that this number was significantly lower compared to the referendum on Croatia's accession to the EU last year when around 33% of the electorate had taken to vote by this time. He added however, that it was expected this number would be somewhat higher before the polls closed.

Hrvatin said that the elections were on the most part running smoothly.

Some 3.7 million people are eligible to vote in what officials have described as a "historic" vote after a 10-year journey to EU membership.

DIP will release preliminary results at 2145 hrs Sunday.
