Serbian police director Milorad Veljovic said on Tuesday Croatian-Serbian cooperation "has dealt a decisive blow to organised crime".

"The cooperation between the two countries is historic in this region. In a way, it has dealt a decisive blow to organised crime," he told Croatian Television over the phone when asked how much the cooperation between Croatia and Serbia had weakened organised crime the two countries.

The cooperation is "a true example of how two police forces in the region can cooperate," Veljovic said, adding he expected all countries in the region to follow suit.

"The cooperation between the two police forces shows that organised crime, its masterminds, are facing an unexpected situation for the first time. I'm sure they will try to hit back, but we won't allow it and this will reinforce even further the cooperation and commitment to combat organised crime," said Veljovic.

He also said that "the Croatian Justice Ministry's decision to enable the extradition of Sretko Kalinic, a Croatian citizen, (to Serbia) shows the seriousness of the two countries as the most important factors in the Balkans which have created for the first time in this region a political climate and the prerequisites so that there is no alternative to fighting organised crime".
