Former Serbian President Boris Tadic, who was defeated in presidential elections a week ago, said on Sunday evening that he was ready to take office as Prime Minister if the coalition partners of his Democratic Party (DS) accepted his political platform, news agencies reported.

Tadic has been nominated as Prime Minister by the DS which previously said that it did not want to enter a coalition with the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), whose leader Tomislav Nikolic beat Tadic in the presidential vote.

The SNS won a narrow victory in parliamentary elections on May 6, but Tadic's Democrats can form a government with their previous partners, the strongest one being the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) of Ivica Dacic, according to Reuters.

"As to whether I'm ready to take office as Prime Minister, my answer is 'Yes', on the condition that the goals, principles and work plan that I will present to our coalition partners are accepted," Tadic said after a session of the DS leadership.

Political analysts have previously estimated that apart from the DS and the SPS, Tadic's government could also include the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) of Cedomir Jovanovic and the United Regions of Serbia (URS), led by Mladjan Dinkic.

The SPS and the DS were the main partners in Serbia's previous coalition government, and before the presidential runoff on May 20 they reached an informal agreement to form a new government together despite the fact that Nikolic's SNS was the relative winner of the parliamentary elections.

Nikolic resigned as SNS president at a session of the party leadership last Thursday, telling reporters afterwards that he would give the mandate to form a new government to anyone who secured a parliamentary majority, adding that Tadic would have to decide as soon as possible if he wanted to be Prime Minister.
