Serbian President Boris Tadic will call general elections on Tuesday and they are expected to be held at the end of April or in early May.

Some political parties have already agreed to form pre-election coalitions.

Tadic's office issued a press release on Monday evening confirming that the president will call the elections on Tuesday at noon.

On Monday, the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS), led by incumbent Interior Minister Ivica Dacic, signed a coalition deal with the Jedinstvena Srbija (JS) party and the Pensioners Party (PUPS).

At the last elections, held in 2008, the SPS ran in the same coalition and after the election the party became the leading partner to the ruling coalition of the Democratic Party (DS), led by President Tadic.

Several days ago, the DS signed a coalition agreement with the Social Democratic Party of Serbia (SDPS), led by Labour Minister Rasim Ljajic.

According to some media, Serbia will simultaneously hold parliamentary, regional and local elections, possibly presidential elections as well, in which case President Tadic would submit his resignation.

According to the state register of political parties, presently there are 87 registered parties in Serbia.
