Serbian President-Elect Tomislav Nikolic on Thursday resigned as president of the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS). His deputy Aleksandar Vucic is acting president until a new party chief is elected.

Nikolic announced his resignation during the election campaign in case he won the presidential election.

Addressing the SNS head committee, Nikolic said he would ask to be inaugurated by 1 June at the latest, adding that his first official visit abroad would be to Brussels on 12 June.

He said he would offer the mandate for forming the new government to the SNS and, should the party fail to use the mandate, he would give it to "a less good option".

SNS candidate Nikolic defeated the candidate of the coalition "Choice for a better Life", Boris Tadic, in the presidential runoff on 20 May.
