Commenting on the election of Tomislav Karamarko as the new Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) president, former party chief Ivo Sanader said it was important for the party to stabilise, wishing all the best to the HDZ under Karamarko's leadership.

"You know I don't comment on politics for a while now, but what I think is important and what I want to say is that it is extremely important for Croatia's political stability that HDZ is a stable party, because the HDZ is most definitely the biggest political force in Croatia. In that sense it is important (for the HDZ) to get stabilised and I wish all the best to the party under Karamarko's leadership.

Karamarko won in a runoff n which he went head to head with Milan Kujundzic. Karamarko won 971 votes and Kujundzic 860 votes.

Karamarko's predecessor Jadranka Kosor did not make it to the run-off as she received only 357 votes.
