The slate of the coalition led by the strongest opposition party -- the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) -- which also includes candidates of the Croatian Party of Rights "Dr Ante Starcevic" (HSP AS) and the BUZ pensioners' party, won six out of 12 seats to be allocated for Croatian deputies in the European Parliament, according to preliminary and incomplete results which the State Election Commission released shortly before 22.00 hrs Sunday after Croatia held its first election for MEPs.
The coalition of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), the Croatian People's Party (HNS) and the Croatian Pensioners' Party (HSU) followed with five seats, and one seat was won by the Croatian Labour party, according to DIP's first results.
The HDZ-HSP AS- BUZ coalition won 32.27%, the SDP-HNS-HSU coalition 31.29% and the Labour Party 5.98%, according to a report released by the national broadcaster (HTV).
DIP reported that the turnout in Sunday's vote was 20.78%.
