The Supreme Court has upheld a trial court verdict that acquitted Nikica Jelavic of murdering an innocent bystander in central Zagreb in 1999 and of attempted murder of "the fruit-machine king" Vjeko Slisko and three other persons.

Although the Supreme Court has not yet formally announced its verdict, its decision was confirmed to Hina on Friday by Jelavic's defence counsel Anto Nobilo.

The Supreme Court thus upheld the November 2009 ruling by the Zagreb County Court which found that there was no evidence to prove that Jelavic had attempted to murder Vjeko Slisko in 1995 and Juraj Dodic and Ivica Bertic in 1999. During the second attempt on 27 November 1999, the innocent bystander Zoran Domini was killed by a shoulder-launched missile.

Nobilo said that the entire indictment against his client was based on hearsay evidence.
