Croatia extradited Sretko Kalinic, a member of the Zemun clan, to Serbia around 1 am on Wednesday, Croatian Interior Ministry spokesman Krunoslav Borovec said.

There were no security issues during the extradition, the ministry said in a press release.

The extradition of the infamous criminal was carried out in cooperation between the Croatian and Serbian police forces aboard a Serbian government plane, said Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dacic, according to Belgrade's electronic media.

Kalinic was sentenced in Serbia in his absence to 30 years in prison for involvement in the 2003 murder of Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic and to another 40 years in prison for involvement in a number of other murders, kidnappings and other serious crimes. Since he was tried in absence, he can ask for a retrial.

Kalinic is the first Croatian citizen extradited to Serbia, thanks to an extradition agreement signed by the two countries. He was found with severe gunshot wounds near a lake at Rakitje outside Zagreb in June. He had been shot by Milos Simovic, another member of the Zemun clan.
