President Ivo Josipovic was asked by reporters on Thursday to comment on the just completed trial of Croatian generals Ante Gotovina, Ivan Cermak and Mladen Markac before the UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague.

"Of course we all would like the defence teams to be successful in their arguments, but we must also know that the evil was committed by concrete persons and someone will certainly answer for it," Josipovic said.

"We have seen that the defence teams in The Hague tried to do their best for their clients, which is their duty. We are waiting for a court ruling and Croatia must respect that ruling," he added.

The three generals are charged with war crimes committed by Croatian forces against Serb civilians during and after Operation Storm in the summer of 1995.

The trial took two and a half years to complete. Presiding Judge Alphons Orie said on Wednesday the verdict could be expected in the foreseeable future.
