'If you think you're in recession, that's your problem'

The Snow Queen Trophy closing festivities on Mount Sljeme were followed by Croatian Television (HTV) reporters in the station's central news program. And there was plenty to hear from the 'dignitaries' on the hill.

The central news program was full of bizarre statements, from the Croatian Olympic Committee (HOO) Chairman Zlatko Matesa claiming that 'it is high time Croatia got her king', through the suggestion by journalist Petar Vlahov that following the Snow Queen scenes Austrians may soon be travelling to Croatia to ski.

Most notable, however, was the statement by Questus head and advisor to PM Jadranka Kosor for economy, Borislav Skegro and his interesting take on Croatia's emergence from recession.

'We are no longer in recession, even statistics show this. Now, if you personally feel that you're still in recession, well, then that's your own problem' Skegro laughingly told the Croatian public.

As much fun as the country's 'elite' had on Mount Sljeme - at the expense of Zagreb's tax payers - it is difficult to believe that Skegro's scoffing at a 'personal recession' was as entertaining to the Croatian public, left jobless with thanks to the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) cabinet's reckless handling of the economy, as it was to Skegro himself.
