The Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) leader, Tomislav Karamarko, said on Monday that he would request the resignation of Interior Minister Ranko Ostojic on the suspicion that the police had misused the system of secret collection of data to spy on senior intelligence officers.
"We will demand Ostojic's dismissal and if he wants to save face he should offer his resignation," the Opposition leader said. He added that other top-ranking officials in the police service should also resign.
Karamarko insists that Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic should also step down for his political responsibility if he "is covering up for him (Ostojic)".
The HDZ leader said he was afraid that the replacement of Petar Misevic as the head of the Office of the National Security Council could lead to the destruction of material relating to the scandal.
He accused President Ivo Josipovic and Milanovic of deluding the public when they decided to fire Misevic and tried to reassure the public that everything was all right.
"If in his report on the supervision of the Office of the National Security Council, Misevic has found that there were violations of law and irregularities, it means that the control mechanism is functioning. He should have been commended because he had detected deviations in the Police Office for the Prevention of Organised Crime and Corruption (PNUSKOK) towards the Security Intelligence Agency (SOA)," the HDZ chief said, accusing the government of politically-motivated personnel changes and of trying to hush up the scandal.
