The Croatian Engine Drivers' Union is organising a warning strike between noon and 2pm on Wednesday to draw attention to "the catastrophic situation" in the Croatian Railways (HZ) Cargo and Passenger Transport companies, while at the same time the Railway Workers' Union will be staging a protest rally outside the government offices in St Mark's Square in Zagreb, the two unions said on Tuesday.
The engine drivers will stop all freight trains on the railway lines and all shunters in the marshalling yards, or about 40 trains and engines in all, Engine Drivers' Union leader Nenad Mrgan told the press.
The engine drivers wanted to halt passenger trains as well, but had to give up that idea after a court ruled they could not do so because the process of conciliation between the management and the union was not over yet.
Mrgan said that the drivers of passenger trains would stage a strike between 10am and 4pm on Saturday May 18.
