Remedial Director at the "Hrvatski Ponos" Knin General Hospital, Antonela Karacic on Friday withdrew her decision to fire a midwife, Jaga Stojak, who did not wish to participate in a procedure of abortion and it is expected that Stojak will return to her job soon.

In a press release on Friday Karacic notes that the Remedial Council had considered and upheld an appeal submitted by Ms. Stojak and had forwarded its recommendation to her as the Remedial director.

"As Remedial Director I have undertaken the necessary steps in this case. More precisely, I have withdrawn the Decision to terminate Ms. Jaga Stojak's working contract. Considering procedure and schedules, the process of having Ms. Stojak return to work is underway. Ms. Stojak has been advised as such", Karacic says in the statement.

The midwife was sacked because she did not wish to participate in an abortion appealing to objection of conscience. The decision to dismiss Ms. Stojak which was issued on July 26 noted that the dismissal was being instigated pursuant to Article 107 of the Labour Act, due to violation of duties and rejection to conduct a set task.

During masses celebrated on the Feast of the Assumption on Thursday, Croatian bishops raised their voice in defence of the midwife.

Sisak Bishop Kosic said that it was shameful for the state that honourable people who have a conscience are dismissed from their jobs.
