Croatia's National Mountain Rescue Service (HGSS) rescued 26 German cub scouts and two German adult scouts who got lost in Mount Velebit on their way from the peak of Zavizan to the northern slopes of Velebit on late Friday evening, the HGSS reported on Saturday.

This group of the 26 children aged 12 and 13 and their adult chaperones set out on a walk from Zavizan to the northern side of Mount Velebit on Friday afternoon but they left the hiking trail and strayed off the course, reaching the interior of the mountain.

The report about the lost scout group was forwarded to the HGSS at 2040 hrs Friday. HGSS rescuers needed several hours to locate the lost scouts in the wilderness and two teams of rescuers found them at 0330 hrs Saturday.

The children were exhausted and poorly clad and equipped for mountaineering through this largest mountain range in Croatia, the Croatian rescue service reported today.
