Members of the Croatian army on Wednesday continued dealing with problems caused by snow and extreme cold in the coastal region of Dalmatia, with the Air Force making available a helicopter at Divulje airport near Split for possible emergency medical evacuations, the Defence Ministry said.

Three army trucks have been sent to Vrgorac and Imotski, inland communities in the coastal Split-Dalmatia County.

The trucks will be used to deliver food and other supplies to local residents. Four snow pushers have been deployed in the area of Studenci, one in Slivno near Studenci, and three on the Cista Provo-Studenci road in the Imotski area.

Eight members of the Special Operations Battalion with two snowmobiles and winter equipment this morning left their base in the central town of Delnice for the coastal Sibenik-Knin County to help deliver supplies to local residents and participate in possible medical evacuations in snow-covered villages.

This weekend, cold and windy weather with new snowfalls is expected, notably in mountainous regions, and a new snow cover of more than 30 centimetres is expected, the national meteorological and hydrological service reported.

Gale-force winds are expected across the country.
