Former First Deputy Prime Minister Radimir Cacic is due to start serving his prison term in Zagreb's Remetinec prison on June 17. Cacic has been sentenced to 22 months' imprisonment for causing a fatal car accident in Hungary in 2010 in which two people were killed.

Cacic was served with a court order to serve his prison term on Tuesday after the Supreme Court last month refused his appeal and upheld the Zagreb County Court ruling that sentenced him to 22 months in prison. The Zagreb County Court confirmed the ruling handed down by a court in the Hungarian town of Kaposvar where the trial had been conducted.

Cacic said he had expressed his wish to start serving his sentence as soon as possible and had arranged with the judge in his case that he would report to Remetinec on June 17. He will spend several weeks in Remetinec under observation when experts will decide in which penitentiary he will serve the remainder of his term.

Upholding the Hungarian trial court's judgment in January this year, the Zagreb County Court ruled that Cacic may seek an early release only after serving at least half the sentence. He was also banned from driving a motor vehicle for three years.
