Cacic has no comment on Hungarian court's ruling

First Deputy Prime Minister Radimir Cacic, who returned from Qatar to Zagreb on Wednesday, did not wish to comment on a ruling by an Hungarian court sentencing him to 22 months of imprisonment for causing a fatal car accident in that country in 2010.

During the flight back from Doha to Zagreb Cacic did not even wish to give any comment to journalists aboard. As soon as the plane landed, Cacic sat in a car waiting on the runway and left the airport avoiding reporters.

Reporters who travelled in the official state delegation to Qatar were told by Cacic's protocol that he would be making a statement later in the day.

The county court's appeals chamber in the Hungarian city of in Kaposvar on Wednesday sentenced Croatia's first deputy prime minister to 22 months in prison for causing a fatal car accident in Hungary killing two people.

According to the Hungarian news agency MTI, the court partially amended the first-instance court's decision, omitting a 3-year suspension on probation.

Based on information by a court spokesman Reuters reports that the ruling is not open to appeal and Cacic will need to start his sentence probably in 1-2 months.

The court spokesman Attila Vadocz, told Retuters that the first deputy prime minister and minister of economy could be released on parole after spending half of the 22 months in prison.

He said that Cacic cannot appeal the latest ruling and that in keeping with Hungarian practise the sentence must start within 1-2 months.

The first-instance ruling sentenced Cacic to 22 months with a 3-year suspension on probation.
