Blast in west Zagreb caused by explosive device

An on-site investigation showed that an explosion on the railway in the vicinity of the Podsused railway station on Wednesday morning was caused by an unknown explosive device, Zagreb police reported adding that further investigation would determine what kind of a device this was.

This is an extraordinary event, a police official told the press, adding however it was too early to speculate whether this was an act of terrorism.

An explosion was reported at about 0350 hrs on the railway in the vicinity of the Podsused railway station, and according to the city police, the explosion had occurred in front of a cargo train. There were no injuries. However, the blast damaged tracks and the engine of the cargo train and smashed windows on nearby buildings and houses.

Road and railway traffic resumed shortly before 1700 hours.
