Some 1,000 people gathered for an anti-government protest in the eastern Croatian city of Vinkovci on Wednesday evening.

At the rally, organised through the online social network Facebook, organiser Branimir Puskaric accused the government and the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) of betraying war veterans, farmers, and all citizens.

The protesters marched from the city's main square to the HDZ offices, the local office of the Croatian Employment Service and the Town Hall, and later dispersed peacefully.

Puskaric announced new protest marches for next week.
