The government on Wednesday appointed Vlado Dominic as police director to a five-year term. He was nominated for the post by Interior Minister Ranko Ostojic and was until now Ostojic's chief of staff.

The Croatian police were without a director since the end of last year, when Oliver Grbic was relieved of duty. The acting police director in that period was Drazen Vitez.

A criminology graduate, the 47-year-old Dominic was one of 14 candidates who applied for the post. Applications were invited on May 11.

Dominic was one of Ostojic's closest associates when he was the police director, from 2001 to 2004.

He is not a member of any political party.
