A former customs chief and treasurer of the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) party, Mladen Barisic, suspected of siphoning about HRK 40 million from state companies and ministries via his friend Nevenka Jurak's advertising company Fimi Media, has presented his defence at the Office for the Suppression of Corruption and Organised Crime (USKOK), his attorney Rajko Mlinaric said.

He said Barisic was deposed on Wednesday and Thursday afternoon, but would not reveal details of the deposition or comment on media claims that Barisic gave a detailed description of how he siphoned the money.

Mlinaric said Barisic would be deposed by USKOK investigators tomorrow as well.

Barisic has been in custody since September 30 so that he could not tamper with witnesses.
