Parliament Speaker Josip Leko on Tuesday received a group of Croatian scouts who brought the "Bethlehem light of peace" to the Sabor. Parliament is the sponsor of the Bethlehem light and Mr Leko hoped that its light would bring better understanding and solidarity between all people.

Leko thanked the president of the Croatian Scouts Zeljko Rogic and the lamp was then hung outside the Sabor building where it will remain until Christmas.

The Peace Light from Bethlehem campaign was originally organised by the Austrian Broadcasting Company - ORF for Christmas 1986 and one viewer decided to offer light in place of a Christmas present which then turned out to be accepted throughout the world.

Croatian scouts have taken part in this international event for 26 years and this year Croatia was the first country to be given the light to mark 100 years of scouts in the country and 60 years of the Croatian Scout Alliance.

The Croatian Sabor is the sponsor of this year's activities. The light is lit on the first Sunday of Advent in Bethlehem and then passed on around the world. This year the lighting ceremony had to be postponed due to conflicts in the Holy Land between Israelis and the Palestinian Hamas.
