Commenting on media headlines that Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor was considering the possibility to schedule parliamentary election as late as in March 2012, the president of the Croatian Social Democratic Union (SDP), Zoran Milanovic, said on Wednesday the SDP was ready for the elections and that "those who give a formal legitimacy to this government are assuming huge responsibility for the continuation of this agony and hangover".
"The Constitution is clear about the constitutional deadlines for the elections and in which circumstances could the election law be changed and adjusted, There are no unknowns for those who wish to follow the law and act in a European manner and those who don't want to do that will alway engage in shady schemes," Milanovic told reporters in parliament.
"The SDP is ready for the elections. The only question is how patient the Croatian citizens are," he added.
Asked to comment on the return of former prime minister Ivo Sanader and about his opinion about the outcome of the scandals currently being investigated, Milanovic said the SDP was never part of that story, stressing that this was the story of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) party.
I can proudly say that the SDP is not a part of that story. At the time when the SDP was the ruling party, invitations for bids had been carried out according to the highest standards, Milanovic said.
