Damir Bajs and Branko Hrg are candidates for the new leader of the Croatian Peasant Party (HSS) which will hold an election convention in Zagreb on Saturday. A total of 1,026 delegates of this 51,000-strong party will decide on the new leadership.
Josip Friscic, who has been at the helm of the HSS since December 2005, will not stand for party president after the HSS did not perform well at the last parliamentary elections. The HSS won only one seat in the seventh parliament, after it had had six deputies in the previous one.
Bajs, a former tourism minister, is the only MP of the HSS and Hrg is currently the mayor of the northern town of Krizevci.
