The Croatian Peasant Party (HSS) on Tuesday asked that the government to withdraw a regulation which raised the level of genetically modified organisms (GMO) in products and HSS Vice-President Marijana Petir accused the government of having adopted that "disputable regulation" in secrecy, explaining that this paved the way for the import of GM products which had so far been banned in Croatia.
She told a news conference in Zagreb that the provisions regulated a possibility for genetically modified maize to incorporate more genes which she said would increase its resistance to pests but also its toxicity to useful insects and people.
Challenging the legality of that regulation, Petir accused the government of ignoring the decisions of all Croatian counties that declared themselves as GMO-free areas.
