This is the last moment for change for the better and we must use it, the Croatian People's Party (HNS) president Radimir Cacic said addressing the 12th election convention of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Zagreb on Saturday.

"The citizens rightfully expect us to make use of this moment. It is the last moment for the change for the better in the country and we make good changes," said Cacic whose HNS is a partner in the SDP-led ruling coalition.

He extended his greetings to the SDP which he described as a friend of his party, who shared the same values.

Cacic said that the SDP was the most responsible and major party in the governing four-party coalition while his HNS was a strategic partner.

"We have quality partners in the IDS and the HSU and I can't see any reasons not to achieve a good result," Cacic said referring to the Istrian Democratic Party (IDS) and the Croatian Pensioners' Party (HSU) as the remaining two junior partners in the government.

Addressing the convention, the IDS leader Ivan Jakovcic said that the SDP and his party had experienced ups and downs in their relations over the past 20 years, and that their relationship was now the best ever.

Refuting claims that the IDS was the weakest link in the coalition, Jakovcic said that "the IDS is a stable, steady and strong partner".

The HSU leader Silvano Hrelja as well as the vice president of the Independent Democratic Serb Party (SDSS), Milorad Pupovac, also addressed the SDP convention, with Hrelja pledging that the results of the ruling coalition would be "measurable and palpable" in one year's time.
