Announcing the tourism season in Kopacki Rit Nature Park in eastern Croatia, the park's director Damir Opacic said this past week that with the arrival of the Black Stork, it could be said the season has begun.

Opacic said that the park's reception centre was finally being reconstructed following a bush fire last summer and that around HRK 600,000 had been secured by the environment protection agency for this purpose.

Opacic said that the park had been flooded for more than a month now but that this was a natural phenomenon in favour of the ecological system of this swamp region. He noted that over 40 species of fish were spawning at this time of the year and that all fishing was banned from 1 February to 15 June.

Last year over 30,000 people visited the park. This year we have introduced a novelty for visitors with a special train running from Osijek's Fortress to the park, Opacic said.

Kopacki Rit boasts over 300 various bird species and around 30,000 birds that inhabit the nature reserve over the winter months.
