Croatian generals Ante Gotovina and Mladen Markac, acquitted by the Hague war crimes tribunal earlier in the day, arrived in Zagreb's main square on Friday afternoon welcomed by tens of thousands of citizens amid applause and cheering.

The generals arrived in Croatia aboard a government plane.

The welcome in Ban Jelacic Square, with citizens chanting "Vukovar", waving Croatian flags, lighting flares and singing patriotic songs, was covered by many media.

In the evening, Markac and Gotovina will be received by President Ivo Josipovic.
