SDP-led coalition wins in eight constituencies, HDZ wins in two and the diaspora

According to preliminary incomplete results of Sunday's parliamentary election, released after 4 am Monday by the State Election Commission (DIP), the centre-left coalition led by the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has won a majority of votes in eight constituencies, while the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) and its coalition partners the Croatian Civic Party (HGS) and the Democratic Centre (DC) have won the most votes in two constituencies and in the constituency designed for Croatians living abroad.

By 4 am when the last polling station for the diaspora was closed in Los Angeles, DIP had processed 98 percent of votes in 11 constituencies.

In Constituency No. 1, the SDP-led coalition, which also includes the Croatian People's Party (HNS), the Istrian Democratic Party (IDS) and the Croatian Pensioners' Party (HSU), has won 45.56 percent of the vote. It is followed by the HDZ with 18.44 percent, and the Labour Party with 7.67 percent of the vote.

In Constituency No. 2, the SDP-led coalition has won 42.67 percent of votes, the HDZ has won 21.47 percent, the Croatian Peasant Party (HSS) 6.14 percent and the Labour Party 5.76 percent.

The centre-left coalition has won the most votes also in Constituency No. 3, 52.7 percent. The HDZ has won 15.51 percent and the Labour Party 10.15 percent of the vote.

In Constituency No. 4, the SDP-led coalition has won 33.05 percent of the vote, the HDZ has won 23.46 percent and the Croatian Democratic Alliance of Slavonia and Baranja (HDSSB) 21.66 percent.

In Constituency No. 5, the election winner is the HDZ with 32.93 percent of votes, followed by the SDP-led coalition with 32.23 percent, and the HDSSB with 11. percent.

In Constituency No. 6, the SDP-led coalition has won 4. percent of the vote, the HDZ/DC(Democratic Centre) coalition has won 21.5 percent and the Labour Party 5.88 percent.

In Constituency No. 7, the SDP-led coalition has secured 42.29 percent of the vote, the HDZ is second with 21.9 percent and the Labour Party is third with 6.21 percent of the vote.

The centre-left coalition has achieved the best overall result in Constituency No. 8, with 57.41 percent of votes, the HDZ has won 12.15 percent, the Labour Party 5.72 percent and the Ladonja party 5.14 percent.

In Constituency No. 9, the HDZ/HGS coalition has won 37.03 percent of the vote, which is the best overall result for the HDZ at Sunday's election. The HDZ is followed by the SDP-led coalition with 28.78 percent, and the Independent List of retired Catholic priest Ivan Grubisic with 4.55 percent.

In Constituency No. 10, the SDP-led coalition has won 33.15 percent of the vote, followed by the HDZ/HGS coalition with 30.58 percent of the vote, Grubisic's list with 10.85 percent, and the right-wing alliance led by Ruza Tomasic, president of the HSP Dr Ante Starcevic party, with 6.01 percent.

In Constituency No. 11, which is designed for the diaspora, the HDZ has won 71.98 percent of votes and the HSP 10.09 percent.

In Constituency No. 12, which is designed for ethnic minorities, the Serb national minority in the new parliament will be represented by Milorad Pupovac, Vojislav Stanimirovic and Jovo Vukovic.

The Hungarian minority will be represented by Denes Soja, the Italian by Furio Radin, and the Czech and Slovak minorities by Vladimir Bilek. Veljko Kajtazi will be representing the Austrian, Bulgarian, German, Polish, Roma, Romanian and Ruthenian minorities, while Nedzad Hodzic will represent the Albanian, Bosniak, Montenegrin, Macedonian and Slovenian minorities.

A political party or coalition must win 76 seats in order to have a majority in parliament and according to incomplete results, the SDP-led coalition has won 79 seats. The HDZ independently and in a coalition with other parties hold 44 seats and three seats from the diaspora so in total 47 seats. The Croatian Labour Party and the HDSSB won six seats each, and the Independent List of retired Catholic priest Ivan Grubisic each captured two seats, while the Croatian Party of Rights (HSP) Dr Ante Starcevic of Ruza Tomasic, the Pensioners Together/Primorje-Gorski Kotar Alliance/Croatian Workers’ Party bloc led by Ljubo Jurcic and the Croatian Party of Rights (HSP) each won one seat. The SDSS will have three deputies and there will also be five minority deputies.
