Interior Minister Tomislav Karamarko said on Friday it was absurd to claim that the police were encouraging anyone to file anonymous reports.

Speaking on Croatian Television (HTV), Karamarko said anonymous reports could be filed by anyone and that the police would check them.

He also said that if it was true that top police officials had gone to consultations with a political party, then members of the ruling HDZ party would not be the most investigated and accused officials.

Karamarko was asked to comment on former Deputy Prime Minister Damir Polancec's claim today that Police Director Oliver Grbic had warned him in September 2009 that a series of anonymous police reports would be filed against HDZ politicians and that the leadership of the ruling party should respond by filing anonymous police reports against opposition leaders.

According to Polancec, Grbic told him to recommend to the HDZ leadership to file anonymous reports against Radimir Cacic and Slavko Linic among others, saying they were already perceived in the public as implicated in corruption scandals.

Interior Ministry spokesman Krunoslav Borovec, also speaking on HTV, said the police would investigate Polancec's accusations and discuss them with the State Prosecutor's Office.

Asked to comment on claims that top police officials had been reporting to the government about charges pressed against former Defence Minister Berislav Roncevic, Borovec said that was not unusual in view of the fight against corruption and organised crime. He added that the Prime Minister and the President of the Republic should be briefed on such matters, as state leaders responsible for home affairs and national policy, but without the possibility of influencing investigations.

Borovec said he had talked with Grbic about the accusations and that Grbic dismissed them as unfounded.
