General Mladen Markac, who has recently been cleared of war crimes charges by the Hague war crimes tribunal, said in the eastern city of Osijek on Sunday that he had nothing against the Homeland War Veterans' Register being made public, but that perhaps now was not a good time for it.

When asked by the press to comment on the government's plan to publish the register, Markac said that he, as wartime commander of special police forces, had nothing against it. "Perhaps it is not a good time to publish the register now that there are negative reactions in Serbia to the acquittal of General Ante Gotovina and me," Markac said. It could lead to new war crimes indictments being issued and there is also a possibility of manipulation with the register, he added.

Markac was in Osijek on Sunday to attend a meeting of the City Council which awarded him a charter proclaiming him an honorary citizen of Osijek. He said Gotovina was unable to come because he had fallen ill and would come soon to receive his charter.
