The president of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Zoran Milanovic, said on Tuesday he expected that former Prime Minister Ivo Sanader would get a fair trial, adding that Croatia must find out how the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) had been functioning under the leadership of Sanader and his people.
"I openly criticised him, and was sometimes criticised for that, but Croatia must find out how the HDZ was functioning under the leadership of Sanader, his deputies and assistants, and how election campaign were funded," Milanovic told the press at the SDP headquarters.
"This is painful and ugly and it is starting to look like a reality show, but Croatia needs to know this," Milanovic said.
The SDP leader said parties must bear political, criminal and civil responsibility for the damage they caused. He, however, declined to respond to a reporter's question if Sanader would pull Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor down with him.
Asked if the trial of Ivo Sanader would affect this year's election campaign, Milanovic said the campaign in Croatia had started a while ago - in some cases spontaneously and in same cases through new scandals, adding that in his opinion these two processes could not be separated.
