Ambassador Foley: US strongly supports Croatia’s EU m'ship

The United States strongly¸supports Croatia’s efforts to enter the European Union, because it is confident the admission would make Croatia event stronger and more valuable ally and that it would also strengthen the bloc, US Ambassador to Croatia James Foley told the Croatian daily paper Vjesnik.

In a comment, published on the occasion of the NATO summit in Lisbon, scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Foley said Croatia was an important ally to the United States and that its joining the European Union

would send a message to other countries in the region that their EU membership was possible if they are willing to look forward and face difficult bit necessary reforms.

Croatia’s membership will additionally strengthen the already strong ties between our two countries, namely through Croatia’s involvement in many key issues that we discuss with EU member states ", Foley said.

He expressed satisfaction that US President Barack Obama will join Croatian President Ivo Josipovic aand the other 26 NATO leaders at the summit in Lisbon so that they could unanimously adopt NATO’s new

strategic concept, the one that recognises and guides and points to new threats, defines new partnerships, deepens the existing ones and articulates NATO’s purpose in the 21st century.
