This year's carnival in the northern Adriatic city of Rijeka will be held from January 17 to February 19.

The 29th Rijeka Carnival will include concerts, exhibitions and theatre plays, as well as an international children carnival, to be held on February 11. The culmination of the event is an international carnival parade, to be held on the last day of the carnival, February 19.

Several thousand people from the country and abroad are expected to take part in the closing event.

The first renewed Rijeka Carnival was held in 1982 and since then it has attracted more and more participants every year. Nowadays, it is attended by more than 20,000 revellers and 600,000 visitors from the country and abroad.

The Rijeka Carnival has been included in the list of the 500 most important events in Europe, The Sunday Times named it one of the world's 24 most exotic events in 2007, and its organisers have won an award for the best tourist event in Southeast Europe.

Last year, 9,000 revellers took part in the final parade and the event drew some 110,000 visitors.
