Veterans' Affairs Minister Predrag Matic on Thursday said that fake war veterans cost the state around one million euro.
"The sum is simple. Anyone getting an allowance for which they are not eligible, which includes pension payments, the cost of housing and other benefits, discount medical costs, free school books and shares, the sum is simple. A rough estimate indicates that this is around one million euro", Minister Matic told reporters after a cabinet meeting.
He did not wish to comment on how many reports of false veterans the ministry had received since the War Veterans' Register was made public.
"I don't wish to talk about numbers. There is nothing spectacular in that. It has taken years to obtain political will to finally make the register public and now it is up to the relevant institutions to do their job", he said.
If we strike false veterans off the list, and we have, then we've saved one million euro from the state budget and the moral purity of those most honourable that remain on the register will be unquestionable", Veterans' Affair Minister Matic said.
