Some 50 professional fishermen from Dalmatia on Friday staged a rally in the Zadar port, protesting against bad legislation on fisheries and calling for declaring an exclusive economic zone in the Adriatic Sea.

The protesters complained about their increasingly bad standard of living, saying that legislation on fisheries was being adapted to EU rules overnight and without any consultation with fishermen.

Speaking of the new rules on fishing logbooks, which went into force on January 1, one of the protesters, Karlo Magic from the island of Pasman, said the logbooks were difficult to understand and impossible to use.

The protesters also complained about the price of diesel fuel which is used by farmers and fishermen.

Asked to comment on the protest, the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Rural Development, Petar Cobankovic, said after today's government session that the government was making efforts to deal with problems in the fisheries sector.
