European Water Polo Championship opens in Zagreb

The 29th European Water Polo Championship began at Zagreb's Mladost Sports Park on Sunday.

The competition lasts until September 11, during which time 20 teams (12 men's and eight women's) will play 64 matches.

The tournament was formally opened by the President of the European Swimming Federation (LEN), Nory Kruchten, who said he was pleased that the championship was taking place in a country that is a water polo superpower.

The opening ceremony was also addressed by the Mayor of Zagreb, Milan Bandic, and the President of the Croatian Water Polo Federation, Perica Bukic.

The tournament kicked off with a Group A match between Croatia and the current champion Montenegro. Montenegro won 11-9.
