Around 8,000 people from Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia gathered on Saturday in Kumrovec, the birthplace of Yugoslav revolutionary and statesman Josip Broz Tito, to mark the 120th anniversary of his birth and celebrate Youth Day, May 25, the day when Tito's birthday was celebrated throughout the former Yugoslavia.

Tito's sympathisers carried banners with messages reading "All land to the peasants", "The factories to the workers", and messages expressing respect for the former Yugoslav president.

The visitors were addressed by municipal head Dragutin Ulama.

Events marking the 120th anniversary of Tito's birth were expected to include exhibitions, hiking tours, film screenings and musical programmes.
