Associations of Homeland Defence War veterans have strongly condemned the failure of relevant state bodies to respond to "barbarian attacks" against volunteers of a civil society association that is collecting signatures for a petition for a referendum at which Croatians would be able to vote on whether they are in favour of having a Constitution provision defining the marriage as the union of a man and a woman.

One of the few incidents which the association reported to the police occurred in the centre of the Croatian capital on 14 May, and to date no one from the state institutions raised their voice against the attack which those veterans association brand in their press release on Friday as "an unprecedented shame".

The Croatian Helsinki Committee (HHO) has also criticised the attacks.

In its press release on Thursday, the HHO says in a democracy no one can be the owner of the absolute truth, reminding that if someone disagrees with the LGBT population's views should not be immediately labelled as being primitive and reactionary.
