The Slovenian Constitutional Court on Friday rejected a proposal from opposition parties to suspend until a later date the enforcement of a law on the ratification of a border arbitration agreement with Croatia, which would postpone its enforcement.

The Constitutional Court said the temporary suspension of the law on the ratification of the arbitration agreement was not warranted by the Law on the Constitutional Court, which was why the request was unanimously rejected.

A group of Slovenian opposition MPs recently submitted to the Constitutional Court a request to assess if the Slovenian law on the ratification of the arbitration agreement was in line with the country's constitution, proposing that until the court ruled on the matter, its enforcement be suspended.

The Slovenian government opposed the proposal, saying that putting temporarily out of force the law on the ratification of the border arbitration agreement with Croatia could seriously affect Slovenia's position in the international community.

The Slovenian Foreign Ministry last week stated that Croatia and Slovenia were in the final stage of a process to harmonise diplomatic notes, and their exchange would make the arbitration agreement a valid international document.
