The decision on when parliamentary and local elections will be held in Serbia is likely to be announced on 11 March, and they will probably take place on 6 May, parliament speaker Slavica Djukic Dejanovic told the Belgrade-based "Vecernje Novosti" on Monday, adding that 11 March was a final date for initiating the election process.

Djukic Dejanovic said that negotiations within the governing coalition on elections were nearing completion, with the agreement in principle that the current government should be allowed to fully complete its four-year mandate.

"For economic reasons, President Boris Tadic and I respectively will convene parliamentary and local elections on the same day," she said, adding that it was quite certain that polls would be convened for 6 May.

The Serbian parliament speaker does not believe that the European Council's possible negative decision in March about Serbia's application for EU membership would affect the election performance of the ruling parties.
