Croatian President Ivo Josipovic posthumously decorated recently deceased Croatian Parliament Speaker Boris Sprem in honour of his exceptional and personal contribution toward developing the Republic of Croatia and his contribution to raising the country's reputation and status, the President's office reports.
Sprem aged 56 passed away in a Houston hospital following a long standing battle with illness.
A special commemoration is to be held at 5 pm on Wednesday, 3 October. Sprem is to buried at 12 noon on Thursday, 4 October at Zagreb's Mirogoj cemetery.
"Boris Sprem has been a great politician, statesman and he has performed many duties. The crown of his career and his service to the people was his election as the parliament speaker," Croatian President Ivo Josipovic said in his Office on Sunday, after it was reported that the parliament speaker Sprem passed away in Huston where he was treated for cancer.
"Mr. Boris Sprem has been, first of all, a good man and a good friend. Citizens can remember with gratitude all what he has done for the Croatian state and its citizens. Being filled with love and gratitude I remember all our joint moments which we spent as friends. This is a hard moment for Croatia and a hard moment for the family of Mr. Boris Sprem," Josipovic said offering his condolences to the Sprem family and Croatian citizens.
