Seventeen people were arrested during the 10th Zagreb Pride parade on Saturday for shouting insults at participants in the gay parade having to do with their sexual orientation and for carrying banners with inappropriate messages, Zagreb Police Department spokeswoman Jelena Bikic said.

There have been no major incidents and so far everything is proceeding in the best possible way, said Bikic.

Participating in the Zagreb Pride parade are some 2,000 members of the gay community and other members of the public who have joined them, Ministry of the Interior spokesman Krunoslav Borovec said.

Asked how many police officers were providing security at the event, Bikic said more than 700, both in police uniforms and in plainclothes.

Members of the LGBT community gathered around 2 pm in the city's Trg Zrtava Fasizma square, going from there through the city centre to the Zrinjevac park, where they were to hold a public meeting including an entertainment programme.
