A body found in a wood near Otisic village in the Zadar hinterland this April has been identified by DNA analysis as that of Igor Beneta, a former member of the ATJ Lucko special police unit who is suspected of war crimes against Serb civilians.

According to unofficial sources, Beneta hanged himself and the police are still investigating motives for his suicide.

Beneta and another two policemen from the anti-terrorist unit ATJ Lucko are suspected of murdering six Serb civilians in Grubori in 1995.

The Zagreb County Court, which conducts proceedings in this case, has ordered detention for the three suspects. Since only Beneta ignored the court order, a warrant has been issued for his arrest.
